2010 GPAA Rendezvous in Stanton, Arizona
Recently, Biz and I plus Sampson ( the dog ) drove down to the LDMA Property in Stanton, Arizona ( 1,402 miles each way from Port Orchard) to attend a weeklong meeting of Chapter Officials from around the United States. The meeting was attended by 75+ plus individuals representing 25 Chapters from New England to Alaska and everywhere in between.
The purpose of the meeting was to show and learn the various ways to build a Chapter and how to have FUN doing it!
Since Biz and I do not have a camper, we purchased a 10 X 20 three room tent and camped out for the week. The first night there we thought a hurricane was blowing through the property. As soon as the sun went down, the temperature dropped 20-30 degrees and the wind picked up. By the time we were in our sleeping bags, the wind was blowing 40 to 50 miles an hour-ALL NIGHT. In fact it was blowing so hard and making so much noise neither one of us got much sleep for fear that we were going to be blown away..Literally. Fortunately, we had securely tried down the tent with numerous ropes and 30 stakes and we survived the night. As soon as the sun came up, temperatures rose and the wind died down. For the balance of the week, we had 65-70 degree days with some wind and no clouds.
During the week, I attended meetings in the Opera House from 8 am to 1 PM daily. Presentations were made by the staff of the GPAA/LDMA on Chapter Management, Legal Requirements, Volunteer Development, Fund Raising, Chapter Promotions and Outings, GPAA Outings, Alaska Trips and Community awareness of the Chapter.
Jerry Hobbs who is the President of Public Lands for the People (http://www.plp2.org/) spoke for a couple of hours about our constitutional and statutory rights related to the use of public lands. Various vendors also come in and demonstrated their equipment and gave us some insight as to what’s coming in the future. Lastly, each chapter was given an opportunity to speak up and discuss what was successful and what was not.
In the afternoons, we all took turns working at the common dig or renovating the Wells Fargo Building.
Overall, the week was a lot of work and fun for everyone attending. I brought back a lot of positive ideas which will be implemented throughout the year.
Rob Matthews
President
John:
Great Job Today on behalf of the Chapter Membership!!! Thanks to your time, efforts and talents the clean up of Red Bird 1 & 2 was a great success. The claim was cleaned up, the brush was removed from along the stream, obstacles were removed, the trail was marked and corner markers were placed in various locations, plus over 25 people participated in the clean up followed by some "Gold Fever" activities. And YES, people found gold. Rob
Looks like about 22 people showed up. Rob has the list. Some trash got picked up, alot of brush clearing got done and we got the claim markers up. People don't know how big this place is until you start putting up the markers. I think the next time I go up I want to have a couple of gallon type freezer bags(less buckets to carry back) just put my cons in my back pack. I think next time I want to explore some more. The water level is getting lower and you can see more. To me what is funny is a bunch of grown people play in the dirt and water like kids. Can't wait to do it again.
Take care
John Dykstra
March 13 Panning Demo
By Lonny Meadows
The weather allowed us to get out and wash some dirt. There were concentrates provided from our Redbird claim, and all who were interested were able to go hands on. There are as many ways to pan as there are miners, so I hope those who were trying it for the first time were not confused. The gold was very fine, so finding it was a challenge and a success. I encourage the beginners to practice until they feel comfortable. Get a few lead shot and put then in a pan with dirt and work it until the lead can be found successfully every time. If the lead can be found, the gold will be found. Good luck and keep panning.
Apr. 16-18 Red Bird Claim/Cache La Poudre Club Claim
Hey folks, I hope you all are planning on coming to the outing. What I need to know is how many of you are planning on staying at Sequim Bay State Park? And I need to know very soon. I was thinking about having one area of the park for all of us instead of being scattered all over the place. We can worry about a pot luck later, as well as whatever else may come up.
Please post a note on the Message Board saying who wants to use the State Park as a base. Thank you for helping me get this Outing going
Just a note about Sequim Bay State Park. It's a first come type of park, so you might want to get there early. The RV sites are on the East side and the Tent sites on the West side. At present it's $21 for Tents, $28 for full hook-ups. And they say Check-in starts at 2:30 in the afternoon. That might be a problem unless you get there the evening before(aka the 16th). I know I'll be there on the 16th.
Or, RV's can stay for free at the 7 Cedar's Casino at Woods Rd. They ask that you check in with security to let them know that you are there. 3 day limit. They also ask that we don't load them up on a holiday weekend or if they are having an event. Other than that, we are welcome to stay anytime we want. They were very receptive to having us stay there when ever we want.
